Spotted these beauties parked right next to where I live in Bangalore. Seems the Chevy guys had taken a halt for dinner. I could have missed it so easily. They looked so innocent, in white, parked next to each other. Thanks to my keen eye… I spotted the new Chevy Cruze, which is due to be release next month in September. It was  a shocker, as this car looks so strikingly similar to a Honda Civic from rear, that most people would miss spotting this. I felt awkward, but ultimately my curiosity got the best of me. “Bhaiya, ye safed gaadi kiska parked hai?” I asked the Paan waallah. He pointed to the restaurant and said “Kuch log andar aaye hain khana khane unki gaadi hai”. I couldn’t believe what I did next, but again, being an auto buff, my feet started moving towards the restro. I asked the restro owner and he told me a crew of 4 guys had come and they are having dinner.

One half told me to just foolishly barge onto their dinner table and to confirm whether this was indeed Chevy Cruze or not. But thank god for my parents had put some decency in me. I went outside and began clicking away. I had just taken 4 pics when the guys finished their dinner and came out and stopped me from taking pics. I asked them candidly if I could just sit inside and feel the interiors, but as expected the guys were either very rude or very tight lipped, they didn’t let me. On pestering them they told me that both of them were Diesel versions. One with a manual gearbox and other with an automatic. The expected price was somewhere around 15-17 lakhs. They said this was positioned to take on Skoda Laura, Honda Civic and Honda Accord. I asked them that was Chevy planning to exit the Optra, but they said no. On asking when was Chevy planning to come out with their small car, they said it would be late next year.

I had one more look at the damsels and continued my way back.

I know your reaction.  Yes, if you look closely e.g. pick the Vxi versions of both the cars, there is hardly a difference of 20K between the two cars. The Ritz has, as the company claims the all new K12 engine with new technology. And due to this the company is claiming a mileage of 17 kmpl in Ritz petrol versions. The front and rear leg room space is almost the same in both the cars. But as the Swift is the widest car in its range, it gives an impression of being more spacious. The Ritz has a better feature offering a 60:40 foldable ratio for the rear seats. The boot space is also comparatively a little more in Swift. This is due to the shape of the car. From the top view the Swift would be something like this:

So you get marginally lesser boot space in the Ritz. Looks wise Ritz is dashing from the front, but the rear end might not appeal to everybody. The rear glass pane is seemingly …. tiny, so I thought the rear visibility would be an issue with Ritz. Though reversing the car was not a problem when I drove it. There is comparatively lesser cabin noise in Ritz than Swift. The diesel engine is the same so you get the same zippiness as in Swift. I wanted to test drive the petrol version but their petrol test vehicle was unavailable. The turning radius is less so swerving into bends and taking u-turns is easier. The gear is very convenient to operate, thanks to the raised height, which I think Maruti picked from Hyundai i10. But the negative is that the whole panel encasing the gear, what Maruti calls the Waterfall dashboard, eats a chunk out of the leg room space of driver. The dash has also been rendered useless due to the downward tilt. In Swift the dash is straight so you can keep a thing or two. The cup holes and spaces to keep your stuff are also more in Swift. To substitute this Ritz has a really lousy low grade plastic cup holder provided under the front left seat.

Maruti is using a new ploy to make sure Ritz is successful. The waiting period on Swift Vxi is around 1 month and on Vxi ABS is a whopping 4-5 months. Whereas you can get the delivery of Ritz in your choice of colour in a flash. I think after the dismal response for A-star they want to ensure by all means that Ritz gets the fair market share, till Maruti comes out with the new version of Swift. By the way this is the Canadian version of Swift, looks strikingly similar to the Chevy U-Va ain’t it?

Saturdays and Sundays are the most toughest part. You have a day off after a busy week. The heat outside is scorching and you don’t want to step out. You woke late due to last night’s movie session on your  laptop. There is a Maggi lying in the kitchen but already have had enough of that. Then my friend it’s the time to for a quick recipe, which hopefully would not turn out to be a disaster. Tell your self “Men are better cooks that women” and tread into the unforbidden territory. But beware the truth about the accidents that happen in kitchen is that you usually have to eat them . Here are some of the things I cook for survival purposes only

Matar Pulao / Veg Biryani:

First of all both of them seem the same to me at the root level.

Utensils required: Cooker, Pan, something to stir with, knife, plate.

Ingredients: Rice, Ginger & Garlic paste (readily available in market, and a must keep for bachelors specially), salt, chilly powder, cumin, coriander powder (not essential, can do without it too), peas (+ any other veggies you want to add…. it’s really Your choice), green chillies, edible oil.

1. Take about a glass full rice and put it in a deep pan. Pour water in the pan and let the rice soak for about 15-20 minutes. After that drain out  the water.

2. If you are planning to add potatoes also, put unpeeled potatoes in the cooker, pour water, till the potatoes are covered in water. Close the cooker and let it heat until you hear about 2 whistles. Take out the potatoes and peel them when they cool down a bit. Chop them into chunky eatable pieces. Drain the water from the cooker and clean it.

3. Chop one onion with long slices, chop green chillies, chop some veggies whichever are available and keep them separate in a plate. I have used capsicum, potatoes, cauliflower, peas and baby corn. Do remember to wash the veggies beforehand.

4. Put the cooker on with medium flame. Add oil and cumin (jeera) and onions. And keep stirring until the onions turn brown.

5. Add Ginger & Garlic Paste. Add all the chopped veggies and/or peas. Keep stirring.

6. Add salt (about 1.5 teaspoon), red chilly powder (half teaspoon), turmeric (1 teaspoon), coriander seed (dhaniya)  powder. And keep stirring.

7. After the spices have mixed up with veggies, add the rice and mix till the spices mix up evenly. Let it fry it for around 5 minutes or so.

8. Add water in the cooker till everything is fully immersed in water. And cover the cooker.

9. After about 2-3 whistles turn off the flame and wait for about 10 minutes before removing the lid.

Voila… if everything went right you would be able to impress even yourself

I am not a final authority on Bollywood. My views are my own. Please feel free to disagree with the comparisons made here. I wrote this ‘coz I obviously felt there wore some striking similarities.

This started as a notepad file on my desktop wherein I put anything that helped in my daily office work.

• vi editor is by default not unicode i.e. it supports utf-8 and not utf-16. So if you have a file containing a unicode character (a 2 byte character) so when you open this file using vi, you will be seeing two funny looking characters instead of what you expected. The solution is to use vim, which is an enhanced version of  vi.
• The following would round off a decimal number. This would always consider the last digit. So the algo involves calculating the decimal part of a number and then rounding off the number accordingly (Assuming that input contains the number to be rounded off):                                                   temp = inuput;

• UNIX does not have an option of listing only directories so you can try this: ‘ls -l | egrep `^d'' and for listing files use this ‘ls -l | egrep -v `^d'‘
• Process Explorer is a wonderful nifty utility to check for what all dll’s have been loaded corresponding to your exe. This is freely available for download from Microsoft website. A similar utility on Linux is also available.  For KDE, KSysguard:
  http://docs.kde.org/development/en/kdebase/ksysguard/ and for GNOME there is an app called Gnome System Monitor:
  http://freshmeat.net/projects/gnome-system-monitor/. On Linux console you can use the ‘top’ or ‘ps’ command. Or you can also use htop, http://htop.sourceforge.net. Also try looking if ‘ldd’ solves your purpose.
• To run a shell script from C++, you can use the following syntax: ‘long sysret = system(testscript.ksh);’. In most of the environments the return value zero would mean the system command executed successfully. Similarly if you want to run an exe or bat file from within a C++ code use CreateProcess command.
• To output a parameter that has been passed to your script, to another file, use ‘echo $1 > $filename’. I was by mistake doing this instead ‘$1 > $filename’. $1 is essentially similar to giving the parameter $1 at the prompt. echo $1 would actually echo out the value and then that value can be redirected to your file.

d. Formula to calculate Nbr of Disks for No Raid config – N = TPS / IOS (IOS=60 for random access and 1400 for serial access). For Raid see url..

This is Splash’s back view. The tail lights look ghastly on this one. I am hoping against hope that the production version will not have these. Notice the Vxi tag on this one. Also notice the wheelbase of the car. This is one of the factors why some favor Santro over Wagon-R. I suppose Maruti is doing this for a better mileage or something.

This is the back view of A-star (Something inside me just doesn’t like the name, what are they going to come up next B-star, C-star!!). The A-star is due for release this October. I must admit that this looks much cleaner and neater than the concept vehicle kept at the last Auto Expo. Couldn’t help but notice, that the whole form and appearance looks like a pumped up Alto from the back, even the tail lights Also notice the funny top right angle , hope its some image problem

This is the A-star from the front. Looks cute doesn’t it. Here is Maruti-Suzuki’s answer to i10. And a mighty good one at that, I would say.

Here comes the good part. The one thing that just jumps put from this pic and stands in front of you is the separate tachometer. I don’t know if you are able to take it down your throat but my first reaction was WOW! The other thing you notice is that Maruti is doing what I call Re-Usability (a term I as a software guy tend to overuse ) You can see that the steering, the gear, the A/C vents are one of the things which come as a standard on most models, be it SX4, Dezire or Swift. The fascia looks clean. Nothing seems out of place. Now me and my friends digressed on which car’s dash was this:
1. In 4^th pic, the car which ever it may be is white in color.
2. Look closely at the 4^th pic and u wud find one paper kept on the dash.
3. Now look at the front view of both white A-star and Splash. The A-star is the one with one paper on dash. The white Splash has a paper stuck onto the windshield too.

This is the side view of Splash. So they had both the petrol and diesel versions hmmmm. Notice the VDi and ABS tags on this one. The car looks well build and sturdy. But I have to touch and feel her with my own hands until I can give a final verdict.

If it wasn’t for the Suzuki emblem, I would have thought I am looking at a Fiesta. Now I might be exaggerating it a bit, but can’t you just see. But then I like the looks of Fiesta. Hey um not complaining. Not one bit.

I had been to Ooty 7 years back when my father, who is an avid traveller, took us for Southern India-darshan. Hate to say it but it was a horrible experience that time around. While in Mysore we got our seats reserved, hopped onto the bus, landed in Ooty, only to find no hotel rooms available I remember it must’ve been around 9 and i was running down the streets to find a decent accommodation. Finally we got a single room, in some Pavithra Lodge if I remember that correctly. It was the most shabbiest room I had ever seen till date. We went to book the bus tickets, to go back to Mysore the very next day. Destiny had other plans. The travel operator asked us “Didn’t you like Ooty?” and he got a piece of our minds There was another gentleman sitting in one corner, little did we know he was an official with the Tourism department. When he heard all this, he picked up the phone and said “My guests are on the way to your hotel, and I don’t wanna hear there are no rooms!!” Then he calmly turned at us and said “I have booked a room at Hotel Monarch for 1/3rd the price and you can stay there. And by the way, it’s Mithun’s hotel”. And the gentleman’s name was St. Patrick. The room felt like a hot water bath on a cold Sunday. It was amazing. From then onwards it was local site-seeing and stuff.

Most of us know that if you go to the same place once with family and once with friends you are gonna come back with a totally different experiences.

I am a software engineer working in Bangalore, which means life is dull and boring. If you are wondering what happened next you need to read the title again yupp Ooty it was again. The gang was decided, it was going to be me, Ankush, his better half Suchi, Prit and Shweta. Ankush agreed to take his love along…. no not Suchi but his Maruti Swift VDi and it did make our trip a whole lot inexpensive. We put our googling skills to the test and found out some decent places where we could stay, but it was season time and all the places were full. And my past experience taught me not be adventurous, as we had females along too. Finally after a lot of trying we got booking for that very weekend in Hotel Charring cross. The rooms weren’t exactly top of the charts, but not that bad too. We hardly cared as we just had to sleep for one night. It was the journey that I found was the most beautiful.

We started early morning at 4 am, but we are new to Bangalore, so hardly knew our way out. Plus there aren’t exactly a lot of people at that time to tell the way. And when we found one he didn’t know Hindi It took us one whole hour to get out of the city and touch the outer ring road. Stopped at a tea stall for morning tea, after by-passing Mysore, and stopped again just before Bandipur national park for brekfast. The only thing the road side restraunt had was parotas. Luckily we had instant noodles and the restro owner gave us boiling hot water, at a charge of course. Road is fairly decent till you cross Bandipur national park. After that there is a rough stretch of around 5-8 kms where there is no road at all. You virtually swerve and decide which pot hole to hit which is the least deep. Bandipur begins the foothills of the Niligiri mountains which go on to touch Ooty, through the famed 36 hairpin bends. Mind you the climbing part is the easier one actually. The brakes of our car got heated up and you could smell fresh rubber fumes even when you were sitting at the back seat.

Alas we were in Ooty, checked in to our rooms and just then, the rain god turned extra mischevious. It rained twice that day. So going and checking out any local places was outta question. In the hotel we stayed a painter had put on his exhibition, so we killed time by watching those. At first I was thinking what the heck am I doing looking at brush strokes which dont even make any sense to me. And then when I looked at the price of each painting I was flabbergasted, 40k to 60k a piece. But the next day I happened to meet the painter himself Mr Ilyas, and he came across a real genleman. Took time to call us and explain the motive and his thoughts behind each of his creations.

In the evening when the rain settled a bit we went out to see the Ooty lake. Now i have seen this lake before also, and in my previous stay in Chandigarh, I have seen and done boating at Sukhna lake too (a famous picnic spot there). So here I am thinking that this might be a really boring thing to do. And when I saw the queue my head went for an off spin. But then they say things aren’t always as they seem. The whole thing was so enjoyable with friends, we had loads of fun. We went for boating, then took a ride in the mini toy train. Ohh and dont miss the home made chocolates you get in Ooty. There are so many shops selling those, I wonder how many of them are acually home made Went for the restro-bar which was just under our hotel. It had a mini dance floor and a live DJ too. So it was good fun.

Next day we kept on sleeping late. It was as if the body clock was doing a perfectly normal thing, to sleep late on a Sunday at last we went to Dodabetta peak, again it was not the destination but the journey. Then we went on to see Conoor. The place is not as commercialised as Ooty. My advice, if you are going to Ooty, then better get a room in Conoor, its hardly 20 kms away from Ooty. And the way is fantabulous. But I think the rain god was still in his sneakers and wanted to play some more. We actually couldnt even get our feet out to touch Conoor. It was raining so bad. Dropped the idea, came back to Ooty, had lunch at a Punjabi dhaba bang opposite to the Ooty lake. Started our way back at around 3:30, but had to take lottsa breaks in between cuz the brakes were getting heated up way too much. The best part was when we were to start the downwards journey through the hairpin bends, the cop asked us to stop and take special permission from their sahab. This guy comes up and tells us that there have been a lots of accidents lately. So we are driving at our own risk and advised us to go at 1st or 2nd gear only. Turned out the chap’s advise was actually correct. Luckily we didnt find that much traffic as we had expected so even after around 6-7 breaks which summed upto a total of 1 to 1 and a half hour easily, we made it back to bangalore in less than 6 hours.

More than anything the trip made us realize, things arent so boring and dull after all. If you have good company the place hardly matters….
